Quantum Mechanics from a Non-Physical Spiritual Perspective

Psyche Is Separate from the Physical Brain

When it comes to the Philosophy of Science, Science, Personality Theory, Psychology, and the Scientific Method, I discovered that studying and learning the difference between affirming the consequent and negating the consequent is the most interesting and most useful concept that one can study and learn about.

It’s the concept that paid the most dividends in the end.  All of the Psychologists and Personality Theorists turn to Joseph Rychlak for this information because he pioneered Humanism, and he was twice a president of the APA’s division of Theoretical and Philosophical Psychology.

Social psychology studies our thinking, influence, and relationships by asking questions that have intrigued us all. Here are some examples:

How Much of Our Social World Is Just in Our Heads?  As we will see in later chapters, our social behavior varies not just with the objective situation but also with how we construe it.  Social beliefs can be self-fulfilling.  (Social Psychology, p. 4.)

This is mind-over-matter that these psychologists and scientists are talking about.  Our mind or our psyche constructs our reality, on both sides of the veil.  Construing reality or constructing a world-view or a belief system is a function of the Human Psyche.

George Kelly taught his students that the Human Psyche construes reality.  Joseph Rychlak was one of his students.  My philosophy of science and the models of reality that I ascribe to are descended from this line of thought.

If every psychological event (every thought, every emotion, every behavior) is simultaneously a biological event, then we can also examine the neurobiology that underlies social behavior. What brain areas enable our experiences of love and contempt, helping and aggression, perception and belief? How do brain, mind, and behavior function together as one coordinated system? What does the timing of brain events reveal about how we process information? Such questions are asked by those in social neuroscience.

Social neuroscientists do not reduce complex social behaviors, such as helping and hurting, to simple neural or molecular mechanisms. Their point is this: To understand social behavior, we must consider both under-the-skin (biological) and between-skins (social) influences. Mind and body are one grand system. Stress hormones affect how we feel and act. Social ostracism elevates blood pressure. Social support strengthens the disease-fighting immune system. We are bio-psycho-social organisms. We reflect the interplay of our biological, psychological, and social influences. And that is why today’s psychologists study behavior from these different levels of analysis.  (Social Psychology, p. 9.)

Earlier in his career, Rychlak tended to define “science” as Materialism, Naturalism, Scientism, and Atheism – just like the rest of us.  He also tended to define Psychology as Humanism, which is a type of Atheism.  However, he adjusted his beliefs and definitions as more information and research became available.

The Materialists, Naturalists, Darwinists, Nihilists, Behaviorists, Determinists, Physical Reductionists, and Atheists tell us that psyche DOES NOT EXIST.  They are wrong.  They don’t know what they are talking about.  Every massless elementary particle or every massless quantum is some type of Psyche or Intelligence.  A Photon is a type of Psyche or Intelligence.  Psyche has been experienced and observed!  Therefore, we KNOW that it is real and truly exists.

After decades of searching for the mind within the physical brain, the father of direct brain stimulation, Neurosurgeon Wilder Penfield, concluded that the mind or psyche is separate from the physical brain, which would be the case if my Ultimate Model of Reality or my Psyche Ontology is correct and true.

Wilder Penfield (Penfield, 1975, The Mystery of the Mind: A Critical Study of Consciousness and the Human Brain) is the father of direct brain stimulation.  In 1933 he stumbled onto the remarkable effects of electrically stimulating the brain.  During operations on patients with epilepsy, in which abnormally firing portions of the cortex were severed or removed (Penfield, p. 13), Penfield inserted an electrode administering 60 pulses per second into various portions of the cortex to see whether brain functions could be induced.  These operations are done with the use of local analgesics, so that the patient feels no discomfort when electrodes are inserted.

After years of such research, Penfield concluded that all he ever dealt with was the physical hardware of the brain and that he never influenced the mind per se.  Thus, he could say with confidence that “there is no place in the cerebral cortex where electrical stimulation will cause a patient to believe or to decide” (Penfield, p. 77).  In fact, quite the opposite suggestion leaps out at us from Penfield’s clinical examples.

Thus, when he would stimulate a patient’s motor cortex, causing a movement in the hand, Penfield would ask the patient about this motion.  Invariably, the patient’s response was “I didn’t do that.  You did.”  (Penfield, p. 76).  Sometimes, the patient would reach over with the other hand and stop the motion entirely (Penfield, p. 77).  When made to vocalize, the patient would add “I didn’t make that sound.  You pulled it out of me” (p. 76).  All such behaviors are consistent with delimiting oppositionality.

Penfield framed a dualistic theory of brain functioning that held that “the mind may be a distinct and different essence” from the brain (Penfield, p. 62).  Elaborating on this point, Penfield tells us that “a man’s mind, one might say, is the person.  He walks about the world, depending always upon his private computer [i.e., brain], which he programs continuously to suit his ever-changing purposes and interests” (Penfield, p. 60).  The mind directs, and the [brain]-mechanism executes.  The mind is like the program writer, relying on the memory bank of the brain.  The brain is like the hardware, carrying out the directions of the higher [mind] source.

As Penfield suggests, the brain can be considered an instrumentality rather than the originator of thought.  It is in the active patterning of taking a position that thought occurs.  To think is to take a position in the light of a certain predication relating to a targeted referent, as well as the meaning-extension that follows.  Directed thought is relevant, well-focused position taking and meaning-extension.

(Rychlak, Logical Learning Theory: A Human Teleology and Its Empirical Support, 1994, pp. 235-236).

Belief, choosing to believe, purpose, teleology, planning, deciding, evaluation, predication, cognition, designing, creation, choice, and negation are integral parts of the human psyche; and, these functions are not found in the physical brain.  Things like friendship, compassion, mercy, forgiveness, and love do not exist until after they are chosen into existence or believed into existence by the human psyche.  That’s Death’s ultimate lesson in The Hogfather.  You can tear the whole universe down to its component parts, and you will never find a single atom or molecule of mercy, justice, compassion, or love because these things do not exist in physical matter.  These things are chosen into existence or believed into existence by the human psyche.

I was a computer programmer for a decade, and I know for a fact that computers cannot program themselves.  They are not self-aware.  Computers have no purpose, plans, desires, or goals.  Computers can’t do science, designing, manufacturing, teleology, final cause, ultimate cause, or anything else that requires planning, meaning, programming, and some kind of ultimate goal.  Computer are like rocks.  Computers can only do what we make them do.  They are not going to come alive on us and suddenly become self-aware and self-directing.  They can’t because there is no psyche, or soul there – no ghost in the machine.  If computers ever take over our nuclear arsenal and bomb us to death, it will be because some human or external psyche programmed them to do so.  They aren’t going to do so on their own.  Computers can’t do thought, predication, meaning-extension, position-taking, deciding, choosing, willing, or desiring.

(There’s no sense re-inventing the wheel.  See Rychlak, 1991, Artificial Intelligence and Human Reason: A Teleological Critique, for a more thorough development of this reality.  Rychlak covered all the bases needed to support this Ultimate Cause Model of Reality, including the reality that an AI will never become a human psyche and will never survive bodily death like the human psyche does.  Pull the plug, and that’s the end of an AI.  Not so with the human psyche!  The human psyche goes on, after brain death and bodily death according to the Science of NDEs and OBEs.  Other books from Rychlak on the same basic theme are Discovering Free Will and Personal Responsibility, and In Defense of Human Consciousness).

The Psyche, the Self, or the “I” is separate from the physical brain.  Once that truth is understood and fully accepted, then a whole new world of reality opens-up to one’s view.  Once you find the truth, you will notice that it is consistent with all other truths; and at the same time, the truth will expose the lies and deceptions of Materialism and Naturalism for what they are – unscientific, incompatible with reality, and incompatible with the truth.

I will never apologies for seeing through the lies to the truths that the Materialists and Naturalists have been trying to hide from us.  Once I got rid of My Materialism and My Atheism, I didn’t want to go back.  In fact, I can’t go back, because now I know better.  Materialism is an extremely poor, limited, and incomplete model of reality; and, I eventually started looking for something better.

Synaptogenesis and Synaptic Pruning

A detailed study of synaptogenesis and synaptic pruning reveals a separation of duties between Nature’s Psyche and our genetic inheritance.

Who or what decides where to place a synapse?

Who decides what type of synapse it is going to be?

How is that synaptic typing information transmitted to both the pre-synaptic neuron and the post-synaptic neuron preceding the construction of the synapse?

Who decides the shape and the size of each synapse before it is built?  Who is overseeing and controlling the construction process?

It can’t be our genes because our genomes are only capable of storing 750 megabytes of information; and, the quadrillion synapses that a child is born with would require petabytes of data to code for 3D location addressing and synaptic typing.  Furthermore, genes code for proteins and NOT synapses.

The command and control, location addressing, and typing information for synaptogenesis is being stored and processed someplace else besides our genes.

So, where is this information being stored, how is it being accessed, and how is it being transmitted telepathically at a distance to the axons and dendrites at the site of synaptogenesis?  Who is overseeing all of this, deciding where each synapse will be built and what type and shape of synapse it will be?

It can’t be the Human Psyche because we are NOT consciously aware of synaptogenesis or synaptic pruning.

It has to be Nature’s Psyche or God’s Psyche who is doing all of this synaptogenesis and synaptic pruning for us.  It’s Nature’s Psyche who collapses the wave function according to the Orthodox Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics.

It has been theorized that Learning is NOT the process of forming synaptic connections but of eliminating, or removing, or the dying away of excessive synapses or the pruning of an overabundance of synapses.  Synaptic pruning occurs at different times and different areas of the brain as a result of development and the chosen experiences of the active child.

Synaptic pruning poses some very interesting and challenging philosophical questions as well.

Who decides which synapses to prune away or kill?  Why are those synapses chosen for culling and others are left in place?

Once again, it can’t be the Human Psyche because the Human Psyche isn’t consciously aware of any of these synaptic pruning processes.  The ONLY thing the Human Psyche does is choose what it wants to do with its physical body and physical brain.  Nature’s Psyche handles the collapse of the necessary wave functions and the triggering of the necessary neurons in order to make the Human Psyche’s choices and requests a physical reality.  Therefore, it has to be Nature’s Psyche who is choosing which synapses have no meaning or purpose and need to be pruned away instead.

When it comes to the cause and the source of synaptic pruning, it definitely can’t be our genes because our genomes have nowhere near enough information storage capacity to code for and handle synaptogenesis and synaptic pruning.  Furthermore, there is NO known physical mechanism in place that would allow genes to command and control synapses.  The genes code for proteins, and that’s it.  Someone else besides our genes, Someone Psyche, is requisitioning each protein and then deciding where each requisitioned protein is going to be deployed or used.  Once again, we are looking at Nature’s Psyche or God’s Psyche for the source and the cause of protein synthesis, synaptogenesis, and synaptic pruning because there is nowhere near enough information storage capacity within our genome for such a task.

Finally, who or what is deciding what each synapse means?  Synapses literally have NO meaning whatsoever at the physical level.  A synapse is a gap between neurons and NOT a direct wired connection.  Technically, a gap in space has no physical meaning and no physical purpose, now does it?  There are NO direct physical wires connecting our neurons together into logic gates and transistors either.  It would literally take Someone Psyche to assign a meaning and a purpose to a gap in physical space.

We know that Someone Psyche is deciding what each synapse means at the quantum level or the psyche level because synapses have no meaning at the physical level.  Therefore, the same Psyche who is deciding what each synapse means must also be the same Psyche who is deciding which synapses have NO meaning or purpose and need to be pruned away.

When it comes to a physical brain, it is my theory that Nature’s Psyche is in fact creating a Quantum MAP of Physical Functionality at the quantum level and then using that MAP to get things done for us at the physical level.  In other words, Nature’s Psyche is building for each one of us a quantum computer within our brain area at the quantum level; and, then using that quantum computer or that Quantum MAP of Physical Functionality at the quantum level to fulfill the Human Psyche’s commands and choices at the physical level.

It is clear at the physical level that our brains have been MAPPED.  Mapped by whom?  It is obvious that maps require some type of intelligent Map Maker.  It can’t be our genes who are doing this mapping because our genes don’t have any physical mechanism in place for commanding, controlling, and mapping our synapses.  The telepathic, wireless, or WiFi command and control of our different cellular processes is NOT being handled by our genes either – not at the physical level at least.  Who knows what the genes and proteins are doing at the quantum level?  Quantum Maps of Physical Functionality was one of my most useful and most interesting scientific discoveries.

I call this new science Quantum Neuroscience.  Quantum Neuroscience is an attempt to ascertain what Nature’s Psyche is doing for us at the quantum level or the psyche level in order to get things done for us at the physical level.
